Born And Raised is the fifth studio album from Pop Rock singer John Mayer. Mayer is currently one of the best acoustic singers due to his melodic vocals and how well they combine with his guitar playing. With this album Mayer moves away from the sounds heard on Continuum and Battle Studies for a more folk and country sounding album like the sound which can be heard on his first two albums. The album incorporates many genres between pop, folk, country, blues and rock while keeping the signature John Mayer sound which results in an album filled with soothing and mellow songs. Born And Raised does not really fit into just one genre, but instead has influences from many different genres which creates a unique sound.
The theme of the record is Mayer’s thoughts on growing up and maturing and the wonderful struggle that takes place for both to occur. Mayer has faced many struggles with the media and this album is mostly about his reflecting on how he has now matured and learnt from the mistakes from his past. This is most shown in songs like Shadow Days where Mayer sings in the chorus “Hard times have helped me see. I’m a good man with a good heart had a tough time got a rough start, but I finally learned to let it go… my shadow days are over now.” The album is the most personal and from the heart album which he has released to date in my opinion as he responds to his past troubles and how he has now changed in many of the songs.
Unlike most of Mayer’s previous albums, this one does not feature many ballads and sounds unique when compared to his earlier releases. Born And Raised like his previous releases showcases the vocals and songwriting ability of Mayer combined well with different instruments used throughout the album. The album is consistent throughout and is a great new album from Mayer which gets 4 1/2 stars.
